Welcome to the Space Shuffle Program.

We reckon the Moon has been a bit neglected as the boffins continue to chase after anything in a red skirt, and want Mars now.
So with the growing interest in Space tourism (once the recession is over) we would like to invite Australia, USA, Russia, China, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, Sth Korea and Nth Korea and any private space travel company or other country with a space program, to meet-up on the Moon as a gesture of good will, to keep the moon as free and natural as possible for as long as we can. Like an international park, with free entry !

We know one day it will be mined, perhaps as a fuel source for interplanetary commutes, but until then, lets keep it as spectacular as it has been for all of us earth creatures for some time (decades/centuries) to come.
Seeing as people have been playing golf, taking happy snaps to send home and generally poking around the surface, we reckon it's time to Shuffle.

It'll take us years, but WE AIM TO HAVE SHUFFLERS SHUFFLING ON THE MOON BY THE END OF THIS DECADE 2020.

1. Phase 1. We lobby both Russian and American governments to get an American and Russian astro/cosmo- naut to shuffle together in the Space Station as a gesture of peace and good will from the people of earth.
If we can achieve that, then a Free Moon Rave is a real possibility, with the efforts of world governments and private moon quests, to preserve, at least for as long as possible the pristine beauty of our moon.

Russian Melbourne Shuffle Championships 2009, 2010

For Global Shuffle 1 we worked with melbourne shuffle crew 4MR – For Mother Russia to create the first Russian Melbourne Shuffle Championship in Moscow 2009.

For Norway: Freedom and Love [GSM]2011 Drammen 6.08.2011

We have been in discussion with our shuffle friends in Norway about whether it is appropriate to have a meetup so soon after the killing tragedy.

Norwegians are the creators of the Nobel Peace Prize and survived Nazi occupation and burnt earth policy trying to erase any trace of Sami people from the planet in WW2. The Nazi’s failed, the Norwegians survived and continue to show the world how to respond to aggressors with a vigil of flowers.

The rest of the world can learn a lot from Norway, and needs to.

Locals have asked the meetup not only go ahead but expands. There will an afternoon all age session and an evening session which will be in a club for older shufflers.

Global Shuffle will be officially dedicating this meetup to the people of Norway for Freedom and Love.

We are shocked and saddened to hear news of the bombing and massacre shootings in Oslo. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and injured, and with our shuffle friends in Norway.

I am very sad right now I have friends lost in the attack.
And I am still going to have the shuffle meetup!

Many of us are shocked after the attack Norway is a very peaceful country and nothing like this have ever happened before..

I am very thankful for your understanding, Everyone I meet is to sad about it right now 3 people from my town where killed after the attack and my BEST friend lost his sister.. it is unthinkable ...

But we are going to shuffle with passion and I will dance for freedom and expression of love.

MIFF Cultural Cringe want Belgium dance film The Fairy not Melbourne Shuffle

The embarrassing decision by the MIFF Melbourne International Film Festival to reject the premier of it’s own towns dance for a Belgium dance film is the disgusting bigotry of systematic corruption and Cultural Cringe

I am sure the Belgium dance film makers did not request we be bumped from the festival and I’m sure they are already fully aware of the Melbourne Shuffle since it’s already gone mainstream in Holland a few years ago. And I quite like fairy’s, they are part of my Sami and Celtic cultural heritage and I am the creator of the Cybafaeries Fine Art robots www.msorobots.com which are based on the Melbourne Shuffle girls of the 1990’s.

We call on the Victorian Arts Minister, Premier Ted Baillieu to stand up for locals instead of this groveling cowardice and weakness in actively showing pride and passion in Melbourne culture.

We ask Sydney born MIFF Patron Geoffrey Rush to show some balls and stand up for local Melbourne film makers. Especially since at his 60th birthday party/MIFF launch party at Toff of The Town he brags "My (MIFF) poster idea was to graphically highlight the sex in sexagenarian."

No reflection on Geoffrey's acting ability or career, but as Patron of a film festival taking local taxpayers money and professing to be Australia's largest showcase of new Australian cinema and most vocal champion of both emerging and established local filmmaking talent… just what are we seeing for our money and his Patronage, apart from the premier of his own movie ? It’s a fair question because it’s our money and our culture he professes to be a champion of.

Well Geoffrey, we are waiting to hear your voice, all we get is embarrassed silence.

UPDATE 6.08.2011 Seems Geoffrey’s movie wins The Age Critics award too, no surprises there. Global Shuffle was not eligible. One can question the bias of the critics seeing as they are all employed by The Age newspaper. The Age is the major media partner and sponsor of MIFF. Hardly an award based on objectivity, more like a vanity award. I don’t think the movie is actually made in Melbourne otherwise they’d be saying so – a lot, and so is not a Melbourne movie as such or even about Melbourne. The Victorian Arts Minister Ted Baillieu, has been as quiet as a mouse, scared of them I guess or star struck. Either way, Neither Geoffrey or Ted are people we can trust to champion local culture with local taxpayers money, and The Age is…well was a great Melbourne paper, but has turned into mindless pap lately.

I’m sad for the people of Melbourne suffocated by their own town’s cultural cringe, while Global Shuffle screens daily in Sao Paulo Brazil for a month at the prestigious international Arts festival FILE Documenta and while the GLOBAL SHUFFLE meetup in Drammen Norway, for Freedom and Love is held on the same day, just 2 weeks after the brutal murders of 77 Norwegians by a sadistic Nazi who proclaimed Australia’s right wing Liberal party Prime Minister John Howard (Sydney) and deputy Peter Costello (Melbourne) as inspirations for his killings and race hate.

The same right wing party is the ruling political party of the Australian state of Victoria. The Victorian Arts Minister Premier Ted Baillieu, is it’s leader. The former Liberal leader and Victorian Arts Minister Jeff Kennett – who appears as the new Victorian Premier in Global Shuffle immediately expressing disapproval of the strip search of 463 club patrons by Victoria Police in a TV and Radio news clip 1994, speedily and publically announced his opposing views of Howard and Costello. Ted…?

We have people around the world celebrating our home towns culture, and our arts minister has nothing to say ? That’s just plain rude and discourteous from the elected public servant and official state leader.

Come on Ted, we’re not asking you to like it, but for the people of Victoria whose culture is on show to the world,

THE Liberal senator accused of supporting a self-confessed Islamophobic Dutch politician has asked a Sydney Muslim to ''publicly denounce'' fundamentalist Islam before he corresponded with him.

Arch-conservative South Australian senator Cory Bernardi has been under fire from moderates in his own party for extending an invitation to visit Australia to Dutch politician Geert Wilders.

We call on the Senator Bernardi to denounce the Norwegian Nazi’s actions and murderous hate campaign, with the unqualified support of the Liberal Party leaders (federal Leader) Tony Abbott and (State Leader) Ted Baillieu.

At the forefront of the eugenics movement in Melbourne was a renowned professor of anatomy, Richard Berry, who in the 1920s measured people's heads in pursuit of a theory that a small head indicated that a person had low intelligence. White, educated people were the smartest, according to Professor Berry; the poor, criminals and Aborigines the least so. He claimed Ned Kelly was a ''mental defective'' because his brain size was that of a 14-year-old.

Berry favoured the establishment of a ''lethal chamber'' to euthanise what he called ''the grosser types of our mental defectives''.

According to Dr Jones, the Eugenics Society of Victoria was ''an offspring of the University of Melbourne''. Many members of the society, which ran from 1936 to 1961, were academics at the university, including Sir John Medley, a vice-chancellor. The university's ''new'' arts building is named after him.

Berry, professor of anatomy at Melbourne between 1906 and 1929, was responsible for the construction of a new anatomy building, which now houses the university's maths and statistics department, and still bears his name.

Berry also collected Aboriginal ancestral remains, which became known as the Berry collection. In 2003, Melbourne University apologised for the ''hurt and understandable indignation felt by indigenous Australians'' after the collection - which included the bones and skulls of about 400 people, mostly Aborigines - was found locked in an anatomy department storeroom.

Dr Jones says there were other influential eugenicists who made Melbourne a focus for the movement.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, decided to go with his childhood hero 64 y/o Meatloaf and has been roundly condemned for it. The footy show went for a stripper and pole dance rountine, typical boof heads.

Meat Loaf, 64, failed to hit the high notes and mumbled into the microphone throughout a 12-minute medley, which included hits Bat out of Hell and I Would do Anything for Love.

His lacklustre performance and high price tag, in excess of $500,000, has been widely criticised.

Mr Demetriou told Triple M radio the pre-match entertainment was disappointing.

Bronx International Film Festival 2011

Global Shuffle has been submitted to the Bronx International Film Festival. We are still waiting for word from the festival, not only about Global Shuffle but the whole festival.

The festival said we'd be advised on 1 june 2011, and the festival starts on 16 June 2011. But so far there has been no word and the site has not been updated since last year and no facebook updates for months.

Melbourne International Film Festival MIFF Cultural Cringe – Film Vic investigated - Widespread corruption Vic Arts

Well this is more than disappointing it’s bastardry. The Melbourne International Film Festival has refused to accept Global Shuffle, the documentary story of 20 years of Melbourne Culture as it has spread throughout the world in it’s festival this year.

Why ? They prefer hiphop and music from America rather than their own culture.

We call this the Cultural Cringe in Australia a feeling of repulsion some people have to their own culture because of deep seated feelings of inferiority in themselves. Overseas culture or the homeland is always better, Melbourne culture is nothing.

Of course local artists completely disagree and so do most of the world including 45 million or so, so far, who have watched the Melbourne Shuffle single by LMFAO the past few months in America (Update: and now Number 1 on charts around the world). So it appears MIFF is really out of touch not only with today’s audience and local culture, but also the USA and the other 100+ plus countries around the world who love the Melbourne Shuffle. We have decided to formally withdraw our endorsement of the Melbourne International Film Festival for Global Shuffle.

Global Shuffle does not get any screening fee or any share of the box office money, the Melbourne International Film Festival keeps all of it, with nothing going to the film makers or shufflers in the movie.

The movie is entirely self funded by Garry Shepherd. - I’ve never had any government cultural funding I gave up after 10 years of rejections by our local state and federal governments. Unless it’s football or ballet, they think local culture is undeserving of our own local taxpayers money or inclusion in any official recognition in publications, ceremonies public events etc. We don’t exist in their world, we embarrass them because we’re not like Europe or America. In fact it’s they who insult us with their parochial insecurities and demeaning treatment. Only when locals receive acknowledgment and praise from Europe or America will our feeble governments publicly accept us of being of worth. Then we are paraded around to sell their new taxes and re-election ploys, or miss out on any promised film investment… A plague on their groveling cowardice.

So there is little incentive for film makers to be involved even if there was a change of heart. It’s pretty shabby treatment. All we get if included is a bit of publicity tucked away in a last minute dead zone programming schedule when everyones at work or school. There’s no pride in that, just insulting tokenism. [ Update: Nope, we didn’t even get a token gesture, that’s the low and typical treatment we artists get in Melbourne ]

We will now be looking to an arts or fashion festival in Melbourne to be involved in, and hold a meetup with the new Australian Melbourne Shuffle Championship which will be filmed for GS2 – due for release in 2013. All appearing shufflers and artists get a share of the box office.

We wanted to hold a meetup before and after the screening so shufflers could meet each other and try out all the new steps they’ve learned in the movie, and conduct the first ever Australian Melbourne Shuffle Championship. We contacted MIFF in october 2010 hoping to arrange this but there has been no interest and no contact regarding it.

UPDATE 1 JUNE 2011

Here’s an example of our corrupt film funding system in Victoria as reported today by Melbourne’s Herald Sun The film makers get maybe $2000 (– yes to make an entire movie, shows you how serious they aren’t) but the film bureaucrats consumed $30,000 in booze and food in 3 hours just a few weeks ago, and spent more than my entire movie budget on a tribute dvd to the woman throwing the party. Apparently this was a secret drunken binge on our money, which a quite rightfully disgusted insider tipped off the press about. That’s film makers money from taxpayers, which taxpayers have been led to believe was funding our culture, not a private ego stroking party.

BUREAUCRATS boozed and scoffed their way through a $45,000 taxpayer-financed Film Victoria farewell party described by a State Government minister as an "outrageous and sinful waste of money".

The farewell for Film Victoria chief executive Sandra Sdraulig has resulted in the future of the government body being called into question in a review.

Despite offering grants of only $2000 to many Australian film producers, the bureaucrats and their friends ate and drank their way through almost $30,000 worth of food and booze in only three hours on March 22 while patting Ms Sdraulig on the back for her nine years in charge.

They spent $10,601.81 making a DVD tribute to Ms Sdraulig and more than $1000 on having photos taken for the gala cocktail party at the GPO.

After learning of the farewell on Friday through an opposition Freedom of Information request, Tourism and Major Events Minister Louise Asher launched an investigation into whether Film Victoria was fulfilling its obligations to support the film industry.

"It's an outrageous and sinful waste of money," Ms Asher said.
"I will undertake a review of Film Victoria to assess whether they are delivering their core business effectively because, on the face of it, their core business is to support film and they've been more generous to themselves in their own entertainment than they have been to supporting many, many film productions."

Invitations to the party were sent out to 280 people, including former premiers Steve Bracks and John Brumby, Oscar-winning animation director Adam Elliot and actors including Nick Giannopoulos and William McInnes - but not current Premier and Arts Minister Ted Baillieu or other Coalition MPs.

Ms Asher has written to Film Victoria's acting head Jenni Tosi demanding all scheduled entertainment, dinners and future events be cancelled and ordering records of all board expenses for the past two years.
The Government is demanding Film Victoria set up an accountability structure and is still waiting for an explanation from its board.

A Film Victoria spokeswoman yesterday referred Herald Sun inquiries to the minister, saying the organisation was not allowed to comment.

The Herald Sun was unable to contact Ms Sdraulig.

Arts Victoria director Penny Hutchinson comes in for a damning report of corruption and cover up with widespread graft inside Arts Victoria. "She has also been willing to lie to my office and to Arts Victoria to conceal her conduct." Ombudsman investigation - Tonergate.

The Ombudsman's probe into the purchase of cartridges also uncovered a widespread culture of graft inside Arts Victoria, where staff frequently accepted - and did not declare - complimentary opera, theatre and ballet tickets. In a damning assessment, Mr Brouwer said Arts Victoria director Penny Hutchinson's justification that the gifts related to staff members' professional roles was "naive" given many of the providers of the benefits survived on the basis of grants offered by the state government.

Mr Brouwer also slammed Ms Hutchinson for being reluctant to come to grips with a lack of management and auditing that had "allowed the corrupt conduct to go undetected".

In a series of findings, the report provided details of how tens of thousands of dollars of public money had been wasted buying non-genuine printer cartridges at wildly inflated prices in exchange for iPhones, MP3 players, an LCD television set and thousands of dollars in gift vouchers.

The report also details how public servants doctored invoices and destroyed records to cover their tracks.

The worst abuses occurred at Arts Victoria, where a project officer received gifts worth $8000 for ordering printer toner cartridges through the Melbourne-based company at a cost of up to $369 each. The government-authorised seller was offering the same item for $99.

The Ombudsman estimated that the same woman also bought enough black toner cartridges to supply the department for 40 years. Toner cartridges expire after two years.

No offence intended to LMFAO, but people think your style is crap, it’s not, it’s just done by noobs. In Shuffling we don’t condemn the learners for trying, we teach them how it’s done properly.

The combination of Rap Rock and Shuffle was first done in Australia by NAM in 1993. Compared to the typical hiphop culture of rap and prerecorded hiphop records and hiphop dance which does virtually nothing with their feet, NAM was ALL live all the time and shuffled.

The front man BC (Cam) was a very well know and famous dancer in Australia. He started dance as a young child, held 2 Australian ballroom dancing titles, trained in classical ballet for 7 years and performed with the Sydney Dance Company for one and a half years and toured with major Australian party rock band Boom Crash Opera for years, appeared in national TV specials with them, then left to form NAM with Adrian (Guitarist).

NAM opened my TV show TOE-Theory Of Everything, most of Melbourne music industry was at their performance at the venue ( Wall Street Bar) Swanston Street Melbourne and at the Melbourne pub rock institution the Espy Hotel 800+ people that same year and the Espy performance 1994 is included in Global Shuffle 1 (see clip below). TOE aired from 1994-1998 nationally in Australia on free-to-air and pay-tv.

NAM were such a hit they released a single which became the standard and first track to found the Australian rap genre scene, using an Australian accent. They toured the country for years and inspired a generation of Australian rappers still active today.

Today they still inspire shufflers around the world, LMFAO included. LMFAO for all their talent, experience in the industry and that of their management, have never credited NAM or any other shufflers, or even mentioned the name of the City that the Shuffle which they love so much, was created in, Melbourne. = Melbourne Shuffle.

It was the worlds first ever commercial shuffle music track to go mainstream, was the first track from new label Cloud9 Dance in the Netherlands and got most of Europe shuffling years before LMFAO had even heard of it – it’s been reported they only heard about shuffling in October 2010, a month or so after the Global Shuffle 1 trailer came out.

It's been 20 years in the making and first up is, arms !
Arm movements have been lost during the commercial era 1997-2003. No surprise why, they take up too much room on the dance floor. You can squeeze more people into a venue if you use the dance floor for crowding instead = $$$.

So they haven't featured in most new shuffler vids on Youtube because they were sadly long forgotten in the shuffle scene when Youtube hit in 2006.

So to help change that here we are with enough arm moves to keep you busy for months as you discover the top half of your body.

If you've got arms, use them. Even if it's just to accent a hardstyle sequence.

You have far greater movement possibilities including your arms. Much of the rigid arm style in shuffling has been inherited from strict Irish dance.

The arm rigidity is a display of high trained discipline, like a military parade move. It's actually an arm technique rather than just doing nothing, it takes a lot of effort to maintain rigidity when the rest of your body is stomping around all over the place.

But first a warning. Use your arms with lots of space, those walls can suddenly creep up on you, and broken wrists are never pretty.

The event is held at H77 - Hardline 77, which is an old Russian cold war aircraft hanger number 77, those red banners are NOT nazi’s. The Nazi’s stole the graphic style from the Russians, just as they stole and polluted the Swastika from the Hindu’s and stole artwork and cultures from everywhere and polluted them with hate. Literally, the word svastika is a statement of affirmation, "It is!" "Life is good!" "There is value" "There is meaning!"

Part of shuffle culture is reclaiming OUR stolen cultures from Nazi bastards, and turning the global war machines into art and parties, a much better use than killing people we shufflers think.

So LMFAO didn’t invent or create the Melbourne Shuffle, not by a long shot. No question they had a hit in the USA, but only after it had been a hit in most other places around the world years before – which is probably why their music execs decided to jump on the shuffle bandwagon. So they weren’t even the first at that. A bit sad and dumb really, that they can’t bring themselves to admit that, especially as it’s common knowledge with their own fans.

You’ll also notice the fluro/UV fashion on black tops etc, and the art on the pants legs, the shuffle pants we call PHATS btw www.msophats.com The bright colors where actually not meant for daytime use, but at night at underground parties where we had UV lights everywhere so the colors glowed, been doing it for 20 years.

So thanks LMFAO for doing our dance, we don’t mind you jumping on the bandwagon you’re welcome, but you’ll do yourself a favor by manning up and publically admitting it’s the MELBOURNE SHUFFLE, because the rest of the world already knows what you’re doing and can probably help you catch up with the rest of us.

Calling it a swag shuffle or whatever just makes you look like dodgy fakers trying to rip us and your audience off. You might have got away with that before youtube 5 years ago, but come on guys hehe, are those music execs of yours, really that far out of touch with the world today ? Don’t you guys want a future in dance music, or are you happy being one hit wonders – we’d never heard of you outside the USA until the shuffle gave you the chance to go global. I mean the music track was released long before the vid, and went nowhere, then you added the shuffle and here we are.

Come on LMFAO, be big boys, show the world you’ve got the guts to be real Melbourne Shufflers and not some half baked wanna be imitations. I mean if we ripped you off, we’d have an army of your lawyers in our faces.

Global Shuffle: At the Movies

Documentary Feature Global Shuffle will be screening at selected film festivals around the world in 2011/2012, as part of the GLOBAL SHUFFLE TOUR.

We want to give shufflers everywhere the chance to experience the Global Shuffle movie on the big screen, with a bunch of other shufflers from your town.

If you have a film festival somewhere near-by, even if it's a road trip away please let us know about it, and we'll submit the movie for the film festival.

If you don't know of any film festivals near-by, let us know your town so we can hunt down one for you.

MOVIE and MEET-UP TOUR

We will be organizing free meet-ups before and after screenings at the film festivals where possible - usually they only screen a movie 2-3 times max per festival, after the premier screening has sold out.

These meet-ups will be a great way to meet other shufflers from your area. We hope the film festivals can help out with some suitable shuffling area near the cinema, and even get some media attention for the local news etc.

A typical meet-up starts about 90 minutes before the scheduled cinema screening time.

We'll keep adding film festivals to the list, in the order they occur during the year.

Some film festivals only accept Premiers (first screening) for that country or region in their festivals. So they get first screening. Then we can screen at other festivals who don't have the Premier requirement. Many of those will be in 2012.

Please remember this is only the submit stage to the film festivals. We'll be very sure to let you know the screening dates if we are selected. Submit deadlines are usually 3-4 months before the festival dates. Acceptance Notification to the festivals is usually 6-8 weeks before the festival dates.

NAM started around 1993 and performed live at the launch of TOE-Theory Of Everything, my underground TV show. It’s an honor to have them now launch MSO Arena.

Combining metal, shuffling and rap, NAM will change your idea of shuffling forever. NAM toured all over Australia to packed fully pumped venues for years.

NAM//BC started dance at age 9, won 2 Australian dance titles, trained in classical ballet for 7 years and will teach new shufflers what it means to 'Rock' in shuffle terms.

This clip shot live at the Espy Hotel in Melbourne which is a rock venue institution going back to the 1970's. This atmosphere was what 'pub rock' (as we call it in Melbourne) is all about. RAW ENERGY LIVE.

This was the environment that I learnt how to play live in 1970's touring around Australia. I spent much of my teens playing professionally in exactly this sort of environment, which is one of the reasons I shot it, because at the time the Espy was only one of a handful of pubs left playing real rock (not corporate rock) in Australia.

When you face 800 tanked up punters in a rock venue, you have to perform successfully immediately, or else you get well and truly booed off stage before your second number is finished... You learn quick.

Unfortunately the Espy got yuppyfied and they don't do this stuff anymore, and the famous band room walls have been painted over. But it's still a nice place http://www.espy.com.au/

When did the Melbourne Shuffle begin ?

The Melbourne Shuffle began in 1992 in the underground TV studios of TVU – TeleVision Unlimited. TVU had their own free-to-air TV station which broadcast across Melbourne (3 Million people) and 3 carpark sized empty warehouses to play with.

Broadcasts would go live-to-air for 48 hours non stop from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday. You could shuffle along with us at home. Dancers would come from around the country to appear on our broadcasts.

Here’s some of the shuffle creators (pic below) in front of the TVU warehouses, one of the many morning’s after. TVU only lasted one year at this site. But it was the critical year when all the elements for a new culture, converged and ignited.

Most in the picture, including Richie (Rich) who took the photo, went on to create the landmark events that defined the Melbourne Underground style and for more than a decade drew people from around the world to come and experience it for themselves.

The opening scene shows the inside of TVU when someone -who would like to forget this incident ;) decided to light a marine distress flare inside and cleared the dance floor for all except the brave and fool hardy like myself who held his breath while getting the shot.

That’s Aslan silhouetted in the foreground. There’s other shots as well Rhonda B and some group shots flashing in the strobe towards the end, and the final fade shot are all vintage TVU 1992. Lot’s more in the movie.

GLOBAL SHUFFLE MOVIE+MEETUP in your home town.

Many shufflers don't have a film festival in their area for the Global Shuffle Movie+Meet Up tour 2011/2012. So we will be trying to get the tour to your local cinema.

If your town has a cinema, one that shows independent movies especially, there is a good chance we can arrange for a special screening of Global Shuffle and hold a Meet Up.

What we need first of all is an indication that there are enough shufflers and other people in town who want to see a Shuffle movie.

WHAT TO DO… on the MSO forum

1. Tell us what town/country you are from and that you are interested in having the Movie+Meet Up tour in your town.

2. Post the name or web site of a local cinema that you think might consider screening Global Shuffle. You can ask them if you want to and give them the official Global Shuffle site www.globalshuffle.com so they can contact us for more details. Or we can contact them.

3. Post map/details of any meet up site/s you think may be suitable. They need to be public spaces 5-10 min walk from the cinema.

We'll check out the details and if it looks possible, we'll start an new official thread for your town and start work on getting Global Shuffle to town.

Eddie Foy

Foy's parents, Richard and Mary Fitzgerald immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1855 and lived first in New York's Bowery, then in Greenwich Village, where Eddie was born.

Six-year-old Eddie began performing in the streets and local saloons to support his family. Between 1910 and 1913, he formed a family vaudeville act Eddie Foy and The Seven Little Foys.

Foy is part of the irish dance tradition that developed tap dance in America. The tradition often included singing as well as dancing, and was usually called a Song and Dance act or routine. You’d learn to dance from early childhood as part of the social culture.

Bob Hope plays Foy in the movie and James Cagney, better known for his gangster movies, plays George M. Cohan, who wrote big hits "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "The Yankee Doodle Boy".

Cohan became one of the leading Tin Pan Alley songwriters, publishing upwards of 300 original songs, noted for their catchy melodies and clever lyrics.

James Cagney

Cagney was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City on the corner of Avenue D and 8th Street. His father, James Sr. was an Irish American bartender and amateur boxer; Cagney was born in a room above his father’s saloon. His mother, Carolyn Nelson, was half Irish, half Norwegian; her father was a Norwegian ship captain while her mother was Irish American.

In 1938, he received his first Academy Award for Best Actor nomination for Angels with Dirty Faces, before winning in 1942 for his portrayal of George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Bob Hope

Bob Hope Salutes James Cagney at AFI Life Achievement Award and points out the dance routine he did with Jimmy as a highlight of his career. See 1970’s stars in the audience squirm under Bob Hope’s razor sharp wit.

Hope was born in Eltham, London, England, the fifth of seven sons. His father, William Henry Hope, was a stonemason from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset and his Welsh mother, Avis Townes, was a light opera singer who later worked as a cleaning woman. The family lived in Weston-super-Mare, then Whitehall and St George in Bristol, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in 1908.

From the age of 12, he worked at a variety of odd jobs at a local boardwalk. He would busk doing dance and comedy patter to make extra money (oftentimes on the trolley to Luna Park). He entered many dancing and amateur talent contests (as Lester Hope) and won prizes for his impersonation of Charlie Chaplin. He also boxed briefly and unsuccessfully under the name Packy East, once making it to the semifinals of the Ohio novice championship

Hope became one of Paramount's biggest stars, and would remain with the studio through the 1950s. Hope's regular appearances in Hollywood films and radio made him one of the best known entertainers in North America, and at the height of his career he was also making a large income from live concert performances.

Welcome to the first official release of any sort of footage from Global Shuffle ! Yay.

It’s been 20 years in the making and first up is arms !

Arm movements have been lost during the commercial era 1997-2003. No surprise why, they take up too much room on the dance floor. You can squeeze more people into a venue if you use the dance floor for crowding instead = $$$.

So they haven’t featured in most new shuffler vids on Youtube because they were sadly long forgotten in the shuffle scene when Youtube hit in 2006.

So to help change that here we are with enough arm moves to keep you busy for months as you discover the top half of your body.

If you’ve got arms, use them. Even if it’s just to accent a hardstyle sequence.

You have far greater movement possibilities including your arms. Much of the rigid arm style in shuffling has been inherited from strict Irish dance.

The arm rigidity is a display of high trained discipline, like a military parade move. It’s actually an arm technique rather than just doing nothing, it takes a lot of effort to maintain rigidity when the rest of your body is stomping around all over the place.

But first a warning. Use your arms with lots of space, those walls can suddenly creep up on you, and broken wrists are never pretty.

The movie is finished and if I do say so myself, it looks mighty fine. :D

I’ve made over 100 versions x 80 mins long to get the right combination of oldskool, interviews and new footage. There is heaps of stuff never seen before, especially oldskool moves. They'll blow your socks off.

Seriously I counted about 28 moves in the opening 5 minutes that todays shufflers would never of seen before.

But there's suspense too.

I show you the day to day life of the oldskool Melbourne Underground, or night to night life more accurately.

It's all authentic real life footage with some amazing tales that I don't want to spoil.

They unfold as a narrative throughout the movie.
So I don't want to give too much away. It's exactly like we did with oldskool parties.

You needed to work at getting to a party. It was a treasure hunt. You had to be at the right place at the right time to receive further instructions.

The venue was kept secret until about 2 hours before the party started. You had to call a prerecorded message follow clues, usually symbols or landmarks. You'd start meeting others going to the party as you got closer all glowing in the dark with fluro phats and flashing toys, easy to spot.

You invested yourself emotionally into the experience.

But will it be any good when we get there ? is a fair enough question before you part with your cash, I know that's what I ask ;)

This is one of my ‘Gallery’ pieces included in the Global Shuffle soundtrack. It is designed for installation in an art gallery environment.

HOW TO LISTEN

ART GALLERY
Typically it involves multiple speakers arranged in the gallery to provide an immersive listening experience, with Doppler effects as listeners move throughout the space.

DOMESTIC SYSTEM
For domestic use it is best heard on a 5.1 home theatre system with a good sub-bass woofer.

HEADPHONES
Headphones with good bass capabilities are ideal for experiencing Binaural and Monaural beats - Sit or relax comfortably with headphones on and close eyes.

EQUIPMENT
The piece was created on Moog Modular V by Arturia screenshot below.

The work was performed live in my Nicholas Building studio (Melbourne CBD) all in one take. The work was generated from silence using only one synth, recorded direct to analog cassette audio tape from the stereo outputs, then digitally recaptured.

This is the original 1960’s analog Moog that it was based on

How to run a Meet-Up

msoPHATS has just been advised of fake msoPHATS being sold online and through retail outlets. Some will even have the msoPHATS label (see above pic) sewn into them.

The only way you can legally buy new msoPHATS is by direct contact with me personally, via a series of emails and paypal transactions.

I have the list of all legitimate customers, so they do not need to worry.

But if you have purchased a pair of new msoPHATS from anyone other than me directly, you have bought fake msoPHATS.

If you are concerned about this, please get in touch with me

They are an independent Australian statutory authority formed in 1995 to administer the Trade Practices Act 1974.

I'm working on the Global Shuffle documentary at the moment. It will be released later this year 2010, check back to MSO for updates.

The documentary will be featuring the very earliest videos of the shuffle done by the original creators of the Melbourne Shuffle.

New shufflers today I'm sure will be surprised at the dozens of shuffle steps they have never heard about, mainly because they are not on youtube.

Most will not be aware that there were actually 3 main genre's of shuffling at the beginning (1990-96),

Only 2 steps have survived in mainstream shuffling, stomping (hardstyle) and shuffling (T step).

But as regular MSO readers will know, there are heaps more and you'll see them done by original shufflers for the first time ever !! on the Global Shuffle 1990:2010 documentary.

There will be limited cinema screenings and an international dvd release. There'll be plenty of Global Shuffle webclips and online extra's, bio's, free music downloads, online competitions and more...

It's taken 2 years of editing and preparation so far. The biggest challenge has been salvaging the original footage. Most of it on 20 year old video tape, which degrades with time, moisture and dust. Then degrades further with each playing and copy.

Just that concept alone will be unknown to most new shufflers who have grown up with digital everything.

In 1990 we were still firmly in the analog era. Digital was 8bit and only available in specialist areas, music, games and private online networks known as bbs - bulletin boards, the same as todays forums.

There was no internet/www, email was like having your own space shuttle and phones were hard wired into your house and used for talking ! text ? WTF?

Most people were still getting to grips with vinyl records being replaced by 'digital' CD's. There were lots of arguments about which format was better. Though everyone agreed they were better than audiotape cassettes. But nothing beat the Sony Walkman for personal mobile sound. It even took another decade from 1990 for Apple to digitise the Walkman into an ipod. That's how far back the shuffle started.

Melbourne in 1990 like the rest of the world was in recession, just as were are today. Times were very tough, the future was scary and nobody seemed to be in control anymore.

Just the year before 1989, Wall Street had crashed, the Berlin Wall had been torn down and we'd watched lone protestors face off with tanks in China.

The 'Cold War' we'd lived with for all our lives was over, because ordinary people decided we'd had enough of that.

We wanted to have some fun now. We were tired of all the pain, the politics, the corruption, the bullshit. We could do what ever we wanted to now. We, just ordinary people, were in control for a change.

So in Melbourne, we danced a new dance. We kept what we liked from the past, added our own stuff and shuffled them around to suit our mood.

There were no rules, no limits. We wanted to explore and find out what else there was to life.

And so began and still goes, the Melbourne Shuffle...

ELIZABETH JACKSON: Hundreds of pages of correspondence between climate scientists in Britain and America have caused outrage at the United Nations as it prepares for the biggest international gathering in its history.

The University of East Anglia is now being investigated by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change over claims that its leading professors fudged data and suppressed evidence that contradicted its theories on manmade global warming.

Our Europe correspondent Emma Alberici.

EMMA ALBERICI: They're calling it Climategate and it threatens to derail next week's negotiations in Copenhagen.

A string of emails sent from the University of East Anglia's climate research unit, mostly from Professor Phil Jones, who has stood down while the investigation runs its course.

In some of the leaked correspondence Professor Jones is asking for all emails from one certain scientist to be deleted.
In others he's asking for some research papers to be excluded from the UN's next report by its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

But one of the most troubling lines was this one. It reads, “I've just completed Mike's nature trick of adding in the real temperature to each series for the last 20 years and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline”. [see complete email below]

World leading scientists have been deliberately cooking the books because there is no global warming, the earth has been getting colder. The 'trick' is 'to hide the decline' says one crook to another as they discuss how to commit fraud...and commit it.

The biggest question is why the mainstream media has not said anything about this. It even involves a British Lord and Head science adviser to the UK govt, and the Nobel Peace Prize awarding dodgy science, well not really science at all, just a con job.

Why pretend CLIMATEGATE doesn't exist, why not call out the bad scientists and throw them in jail ? Why not have transparent proper government inquiries into it and help preserve peoples respect in the scientific process?

Shuffle Music: Practice Mix 4. Swing - Dorothy Dandridge

Swing is a 1930's-1940's development of tap dance. Tap is a fusion of Celtic clogging and African-American folk dance from New York around 1900.

Swing is also the music style that dominated the scene. Swing is a development of 1910-1920's trad jazz combined with European styled marching military band orchestrations typically called Big Bands, 15-40 members. A small band was typically 4-7 members usually for smaller venues, clubs, speakeasy's etc.

The Big Band was for big occasions in big venues. Such as Earls Court in Melbourne 1950 (pic right) getting it's dance floor resurfaced.

Swing loosened up the tempo to allow for a broader louder dance style, generally called 'dance hall' these days.

Dorothy Dandridge is a fantastic singer and dancer from the era. She has a faultless sense of timing and a personality that simply glows on the screen. It is little wonder she went on to a successful movie career.

Swing is a full bodied dance. You really need lots of room and you literally swing yourself, and partner around.

Shuffling in relation to swing is a soft shoe dance routine [1:40 in first vid], actually called a 'Shuffle' at the time, and is where the name Shuffle today originates. Basically a shuffle is tap without the wood or metal taps on the shoe soles, performed in a small area concentrating on the footwork. Just as we think of shuffling now. Swing lets loose and takes up as much space as it can get :)

In these clips you'll find lots of big suits (Zoot Suits) baggy pants, gliding, shuffling, spins and splits.

And a warning...the Nicholas Brothers are seasoned pro's, if you try doing the splits like them, without years of training first, you'll pop hamstrings all over the place and end up in hospital for weeks ! (True - be careful !)

Boogie was a bar room stomp, which people such as Count Basie elevated to high art. It often has coded sexual euphemisms in the lyrics.

There's no real dancing in this last clip, but Dorothy's amazing voice and cowgirl outfit more than make up for it.

Scooter - J'adore Hardcore

A new clip by Scooter - J'adore Hardcore has emerged online with lots of Shuffling shots in Melbourne.

It's worth a look. The shufflers look like hired pro dancers who know shuffle steps, rather than Shufflers. They do the oldskool steps well, but just repeat the same couple of steps over and over. It would of been nice to see some more variety.

But that might have been out of the control of the dancers. It's really a marketing clip to sell this track, not a Shuffle vid. The record Company wouldn't like people to be more impressed with the shuffling than the lead act, Scooter, who doesn't dance at all.

Cultural: How did the clip maker go at representing the Melbourne Shuffle on it's home turf ? - We like to do this to correct any cultural misunderstandings. In a city that speaks over 200 languages in day to day life, we find it's a benefit ;)

Well they got the roof top shuffling right, plenty of space fantastic view, and it was usually the roof of the building oldskool shufflers lived in.

They got Laneways right as a cultural reference (read more www.NicholasBuildingArts.com ) though we never really shuffle in them, Basically because they're too narrow, we've got plenty of really wide open places to shuffle.

And Unlike that freshly swept laneway in the vid - with fresh never walked on chalk to grunge it up a little, in your average Melbourne back alley and lane there's always gravel small stones, broken glass, squashed food from waste bins, rats, vomit and piss on the ground, not to forget junkies used syringes. Not the safest or most enjoyable place to shuffle.

We'd go for a polished marble floor in a building foyer. Most often we'd shuffle outside our studio front door in the polished vinyl passageways of our buildings. It's the only way to glide, in socks too ! :) Or multilevel carparks, with smooth concrete plenty of room, under cover. There's hundreds of them all over town.

We'd have Laneway parties for sure, but they'd be packed wall to wall, standing room only, you wouldn't shuffle there.

I think they're a bit confused with the graffiti too. Graf isn't part of shuffle culture it's part of hip-hop. By 1990 we'd already had a decade of 1st-time-'round hip-hop.

We wanted something new, we got into animated computer graphics and experimental video making, then broadcast them on our own tv stations, exactly the same as shufflers do today posting Shuffle vids on youtube, kind of a cultural biggy...so, missed on that ;)

But never mind, just having some fun with ya there Scooter, the clips not a bad job.

But a rave anthem hands up in the air ? ...no no Scooter, you should be shuffling feet, this is 'dance' music. You should try it. It's easy to learn, even little kids can do it...

Clogging: The Source of the Melbourne Shuffle

More than 800 years ago Welsh seamen danced on the wooden hulls and decks of their boats in wooden clogs, and Clogging was born. In traditional Celtic language Clog means 'time' as well as a lump of wood.

'Time' as in keeping in time with the music when dancing. The clogs were the percussion / drum section.

The KLOG sound wooden shoes make against wooden floors give them the name. The same as Kloppen is the name for clogs in Dutch. The rest of the music usually provided by pipes, banjo's and later fiddles (violins) and guitars. All portable instruments, no pianos, pipe organs, or large floor standing harps. Small lap size ones Celtic Harps.

They weren't the biggest of boats, so it was a confined style. Just a few paces if that. Not much room to fling your arms around without hitting someone or something, or loosing your balance on a rocking boat, so you kept them mostly at your sides.

Simple enough for a baby to start learning, with a stomping foot, and complex enough to keep you interested in dancing it for the rest of your life.

It's from here the Melbourne Shuffle inherited it's core basic steps.

The Clog dance quickly became a favorite from sea port bars to village fairs where they'd construct temporary wooden dance floors for clogging. And that's pretty much where you'll find it still practiced today many centuries later.

Clog dancing is also known as Stomping, which is what the oldskool Melbourne Shufflers called themselves - Stompers.

Clogging, or Stomping as it was called locally, was the standard dance style in Melbourne for much of the 1960's to 1980's as traditional folk dance became popular in the folk revival years.

Melbourne has a very large Celtic population. Much of the population were forced out of their home countries by the Scottish Highland clearances of the mid 1800’s. Wealthy landowners in Scotland could make more money from grazing sheep and selling the wool to the new industrial revolution’s knitting mills, than renting ancestral land back to the Scots. Scots were staved of food and their homes burnt down in the forced immigration to Melbourne – including others such as San Francisco, New York and Canada. Other Celts came from Ireland around the same time also as forced immigrants starved out of Ireland in the potato famine years.

Wearing culturally identifiable clothing (tartan etc) performing culturally identifiable dance, music and speaking your native tongue, Gaelic, were outlawed for decades by the English crown in an attempt of cultural genocide against the Celts. Mid 1800’s they were also actively doing the same to India, China and pretty much every other country they set foot in forcing the world to speak English and be British.

So with the forced immigration of Celts to Melbourne, came a fierce independence and pride in their banned culture, with a renewed determination to never let it die, even to this day.
Fortunate for the new arrivals, gold was discovered in the near by hills of Melbourne and a gold rush spanning 50 years began, with Melbourne becoming the richest city in the British Empire outside of London.

Queen Victoria was not amused with these people she had sent to the end of the earth as being less value than sheep, suddenly striking gold. People who in their own ancestral lands were denied the vote and forced into factories as child labor in the new urban slave class. So the Queen imposed heavy taxes at the point of a gun by her soldiers, on miners in Melbourne , often twice a day.

This lead to an armed rebellion against the British crown and the movement to make Melbourne independent, even creating a new flag based on the navy blue and white cross of the Scottish flag (Saint Andrew's Cross) and a star constellation only visible in the Southern Hemisphere, The Southern Cross (Pics above and right the original surviving flag, and complete design)

In 1901 Melbourne became the first capital city of the new country called Australia. The southern cross is now on the Australian flag, so too is the British Union Jack which many Australian's, especially in Melbourne, would still like to see removed when Australia becomes a republic – one day.

My personal 'cultural heritage' as we call it in Melbourne, where today we have over 200 languages spoken daily, comes from Sweden on my dad's side. My grandmother was born in Bergen Norway from a northern Sweden Sami family (Sami Flag right) Sami language (Saami), and Sami song-chants, called yoiks, were illegal in Norway from 1773 until 1958. She married a Norwegian Sami born on the Isle of Skye, who’s family were forced out in the 19th century clearances and they moved to Melbourne when their family lands in Norway were given to missionary settlers early 1900’s. My grandfather expressing horror when arriving in Melbourne that “…you people live by the ocean and you don’t teach your children to swim ? You would be called negligent in Sami culture !” He then set up a learn-to-swim class in town sponsored by the Herald Sun newspaper for school kids to get their ‘Herald’ certificate, demonstrating you could swim 25 yards unaided in open water.

My mum's side, my great grandmother an Irish Catholic/Sami and great grandfather a Scot Protestant. Both families were involved in the fashion industry mostly bespoke and retail. My grand father quite the dresser apparently, my mother still has his 1890’s swagger stick, typically used for a stroll around town – or doing the block as it was called in Melbourne. They couldn't live legally as husband and wife in either country, so they came to Melbourne where they could. Both families arriving from around the 1880/90's.

I learned to play piano on the family piano handed down to me from my mothers side. My grand father told me he and my grand mother ‘courted’ on the same double seated bench piano stool I’d learned to play on. I was in my late 20’s when he told me, and to tell you the truth, I’ve felt a little awkward about sitting on it ever since …but both the piano (in need of repairs, I’m a piano builder/tuner) and the stool are still cherished.

The music of Global Shuffle was composed on that same well worn piano, then recorded with synths. The solo flute, reed pipe and warble sounds come from Sami Yoiks my grand parents and father sang to me as a child. Banned for 200 years in Norway until 1958, when I was 3 years old, suddenly everyone started singing out loud….all the time.

The music always sounded weird to me and still does, but every year or two in winter I need to go down to Cape Schank in Melbourne which faces the southern ocean, stand specifically on the volcanic rocks and feel the salt spray on my face, blown from a wind straight from the south pole…and everythings fine again. I don’t really know why, but that doesn’t seem to bother me. - The north pole skin and small sinus arctic nose on a humid Melbourne summer day, I get ! No further explanation required. :)

Melbourne is a sea port city built on this Yarra river estuary (Pic below 1895) from the 1850's gold rush days. 10,000 new arrivals a day at it's peak. The gold rush boom lasted from 1853 until 1913.

The main port road in the pic is Flinders Street.

The centre of activity for the oldskool underground was in this very same old port precinct a century later in the 1990's. I had the same view in the pic above, from my Commerce house studio.

I have inherited my great Swedish Sami uncle's hand written (in lead pencil) pocket note book of their voyage from England to Melbourne in 1880. They had clogging and highland dance on the ships deck every night (when they weren't sick). It was the communal meeting place, the ships village green.

You'd finish your daily chores, had your evening meal, and it was up on deck to relax under the stars.

He writes of the balmy nights on deck with clogging and Highland sword dance to the pipes...with lots of refreshments and 70 young maidens (single girls) being Court Marshaled by the ships Matron, for breaking curfew - again. Preferring of course to stay on deck all night where all the fun was
Not a whole lot had changed in Melbourne 100 years later. In the oldskool Flinders Lane district, where I've spent the past 20 years living in my various studios, we'd do exactly the same at the end of the day. Go up to the roof and relax under the star (yes a joke, the city lights washed out everything else, but we could imagine pretty good) and we'd shuffle on the roofs, often waving to each other like ships passing in the night.

This is Flinders Lane 1875, (Pic Below) it's the back alley to the Flinders Street grand shop fronts. As you can imagine, all the sorts of things that happen in gold rush towns main harbor road back alleys, went on here, and still does.

It was in artists studio parties down this very Lane in the early 1990's that the first oldskool shuffle parties were held.

I lived the last 10 years in Flinders Lane in this same building on the corner of Flinders Lane and Swanston street, and like many friends, shuffled on it's roof. The Nicholas Building (Pic left 2004)

The folk revival was quite huge in Melbourne 250,000 turning up to local folk act The Seekers in the early 1960's for instance.

We also had a warm to hot climate and out door parties in the bushland hills of Melbourne were well attended. Most of these hills areas were semi rural, so there were lots of barns, sheep shearing sheds and church halls etc with wooden floors for clogging.

They'd be big family and village social occasions. Barn Dancing, Square Dancing, Irish Dancing or simply 'The Dance' as we'd call it. We'd been holding these dances for 100 years. Just as our ancestors had been doing for centuries.

But Folk along with Clogging, to a modern hippie generation (late 1960's) had a bit of a dated kitsch feel about it. It was more the acoustic folk music scene that went for authentic traditional, thankfully preserving traditional moves and music.

The sort of purists who booed Bob Dylan and called him a Judas, when he first used an electric guitar on stage mid 1960's. But they could be a bit of a stick in the mud too. Not permitting any modern cultural elements to be included.
Melbourne Hippies, liked Hendrix feedback type guitars and psychedelic synthesiser sounds Pink Floyd etc. Not on the list of most loved bands for clogging at the time.

But we danced the same clog stomping way, we'd grown up with it, we liked it, but it just wasn't cool enough for us anymore.

So we did the same steps, but in normal shoes, (no wood or metal taps), usually Melbourne made rubber soled Dunlop Volley canvas tennis shoes or bare feet. And called it Stomping.

If ever there was an authentic traditional Melbourne Shuffle shoe to recommend shufflers, it would be this classic, Dunlop Volley 'SANDSHOE' made in Melbourne 1924.

In 1924, The Dunlop Rubber Factories in Melbourne decided to make Sandshoes. This was to compliment their Rubber Boots (Gum Boots) which were first manufactured in 1915.

The sole pattern was inspired by the Dunlop car tyre tread, Dunlop also make car tyres. Dunlop Volley's were first introduced as a tennis shoe in 1939 by tennis player Adrian Quist.

The Dunlop Volley is a classic piece of footwear, basically a rubber soled clog. Strong sturdy cheap. It's broad weave canvass upper allowed your feet to breath on a hot Melbourne summer day, when our beach sand can scorch your feet in 40C heat. You could wear them into the salt water at the beach too. That was a big plus. Apart from bathers and surfies etc, there's lots of recreational water craft in Melbourne, water skiing, yacht clubs, bay fishing, people would go snorkeling in them over shallow water reefs.
You'd just wash them out with fresh water after the sea, let them dry overnight, and off you'd go again the next day. Fresh shoes everyday of summer.

They were flat soled for outdoor and indoor tennis courts where healed footwear is banned. The heals dent the court surface, not a good thing for a tennis court.

They'd last years, fit sooo comfortably, and you could wear them with bare feet or socks.

Yes we'd get very attached to our old worn out Volley's. Worn with great pride. So much that owners post pics of them online like these.

And because they were canvas, and we're in Melbourne, that means you've got to paint them too.

So stomping moved off the wooden floor onto the dirt and ankle deep sand. We like our beaches in Melbourne.
I won a stomping dance competition on the beach when I was 9. It was 1964 and surf music was big. I lived on the beach road, this Beach (Pic below) was my front yard.
Most of town lived on the beach in summer, so there was the usual summer entertainment for kids. The comp was run by a commercial Melbourne rock radio station. Stomping (The Stomp) was very popular among the Melbourne surfies. There's not a whole lot of ways to move your feet in soft deep Melbourne beach sand, but Stomp !

A simple two step in time with the beat, throw in an occasional kick, spin or trick and you were set.

In the 1970's we simply dropped 'stomp' as a label and called it rock. Not to be confused with 1950's rock couples based dancehall.

I was in the crew running the Upwey Dance in 1975. 1200 sharpies, hippies and suburban kids a month turned up to them at the Upwey High School Hall. They were raves, live acts, dj's, flashing coloured lights, lava lamps, UV and fluro decor, balloons, mirror balls, smoke AND Bubble machines, big stadium sized hall, big sound system, with pinball machine arcade, cloak room and munchies bar.

The Police actually encouraged the dances, telling us that the crime rate went down for our whole region of town the weekends our dances were on.

So we helped the Police set up their own, because we were full to capacity. The Police did the same setting up regular monthly dances called The Blue Light Disco all across Melbourne. They used police blue flashing lights, the local high school kids would do the decor, and the cops were the DJ's...yes seriously.

100,000's of Melbourne high school kids packed out the 'Blue Lights' for a decade. All stomping and rockin to whatever the music was being played.

So when raves hit town, people in Melbourne just kept dancing the same, because it works for so many styles of music, not just different music styles over the decades, but centuries, adding our own cultural spin on it, to pass on to future generations.

Except we Shufflers wore soft soled trainers/runners/gym shoes designed to give grip on polished surfaces. Not the smartest move when you want 'slip'. But the shoes were worn as a fashion statement, not for practicality.

So not to be held back by this fashion-over-design detail, we sprinkled baby talcum powder on the floor to give us some slip. Problem solved, fashion statement preserved, everybody's happy.

All the instantly recognisable shuffle moves are in traditional clogging.

Hardstyle (Stomping), Shuffling (sideways movement by twisting heel/toe) kicks, running man, glides.

Some of the clearest and best performed of these moves can be seen in the legendary Blue Ridge Mountain Dancers with Pete Seeger (1967)

Impressive not only for it's clogging routine, but fitting it onto such a small band stage with 8 dancers is very impressive.
I'll draw your attention to the stomp move as you can see in this first video still (below). It looks exactly like a horse pawing at the ground. Horses are sacred in Celtic lore (using the broad definition of the Celtic language group) many chieftains being buried with their prized steed along with their sword to take them to the next life.
Often all of them buried on land, in a boat !
Horses were making these moves before the dawn of the human species, I have no doubt the same stomping move inspired stone age ancestors of early Celts to mimic it as homage. Especially seeing as 2500 year old Celt jewellery is covered in stylised horse tributes. (Pics right)
And probably why the French quadrilles were adored. They were first an 18th century military equestrian display with 4 horses and 4 people. Later it became 4 pairs of humans, but the horse move remains a feature. Even the clogging rhythms sound like trotting, canter and galloping horses hooves.
A number of oldskool shufflers were actually known for their great dancing horse like shuffle moves.

Clog stomping is the basis for Hardstyle Shuffling today. It appears to be an ancient mimic-move homage to horses. Horses were sacred in very early Celtic cultures.

Variations of clogging spread to different regions by the sailors when they were in port, often combining with local folk dance traditions over time to form Irish dance, Scottish dance and Flamenco in Celtic Iberia/Spain, as we know them today.
Over the centuries regional variations emerged and distinct local cultural styles developed.
The full wooden clog made way for a leather top clog around the 1400's as the dance moved inland to wooden floored dance halls. They became a cheap strong footware, such as the traditional Lancashire (UK) wooden soled clog worn by 19th century industrial revolution mill workers. Who entertained themselves by syncopating foot taps with the rhythmic sounds made by the loom shuttles, creating the rhythmic foundation for Tap dance. (pic above)
During this 19th century England, clog dancing competitions were held and there were professional clog dancers who performed in the music halls.
Clogging was taken by Irish, Scot, Welsh and English immigrants to the new city of New York, where it combined with African-American culture and evolved into Tap ...despite racial segregation laws of the time forbidding either cultures associating with each other.
In the 1920's these racist attitudes led to dance being banned in New York City, along with alcohol. It was the prohibition era. The ban on alcohol was lifted pretty quickly, but despite protests and high court trials, the ban on dancing remains to this day...and yet the dance lives on.

It wasn't just moves that we inherited from the Sailors. We can thank them for Phats as well.
Melbourne Shuffle Phats are based on traditional sailors bell-bottom pants.

The large cuff size of the pants made them easy to roll up to the knee, so they didn't get wet working on deck or wading to shore.
They were also great to Stomp in

Our concept of Shuffle Crew, also comes from the sea. It relates to a 'Ships Crew' Big or small, lots of different skills, roles and cultures, but all in the same crew, all dependant on each other on the same voyage.

The opening group formation is known as a quadrille which were first an 18th century military equestrian display with 4 horses and 4 people.
It was adapted for French court culture mid 1700's with 4 human couples, horses not included. Typically known as barn dancing or square dancing, because you start in a square formation.

Russian shuffle crew 4MR//For Mother Russia have set up the first Russian Melbourne Shuffle League (RMSL), in fact it's the worlds first Shuffle league too.

MSO supports the League and the winner/s will be appearing with 4MR on the GLOBAL SHUFFLE dvd.

Here's a compilation vid of some of the great shufflers in the league. Fantastic to see so many girls in the league too.

Lots of great shuffling all around, with some very distinctive styles. Check out Emilio's unbelievably amazing spin 2:04. I had to replay it a few times to make sure it wasn't faked ! What training did you do ? Very well done Emilio.

MSO started Global Shuffle in 2007, as a fight back to a campaign to Ban the Melbourne Shuffle

Naturally shufflers went berzerk and staged protest boycotts of the Sydney club owner who wanted to ban the Shuffle. He said Shufflers took up too much room on the dance floor. Club owners prefer to have people standing on the dance floor drinking alcohol, they make more money that way.

So we set the date 17 May 2008 as a challenge to this fool, to prove that Shufflers were no push-over, and there was no way he could ban Shufflers shuffling. We would defiantly shuffle where ever we were around the world on that day, banned or not.

Shufflers started to avoid clubs in general that didn't allow Shuffling on the dance floors as a protest too. Everybody just started having meet-ups in public parks, malls, carparks all the free places. That really pissed off the club owners, they had no control over us, and others were avoiding clubs in protest to support us. The clubs were loosing lots of money.

The Sydney club owner fell out of favour very quickly as other Sydney club owners abandoned him, and publicly announced their support for Shufflers and Shuffling. All of the calling him an idiot.

By the time 17 May 2008 rolled around, the anti-Shuffle guys club had closed, and nobody has heard of him since.

About 4 weeks before 17 May 2008, a young lady named Jancis from Singapore contacted me to see if she could hold an official Global Shuffle meet-up event in Singapore. It would also be Singapore's first official Shuffle meet-up.

There wasn't much time, so we worked really hard and fast getting proper permission etc to hold an outdoor meet-up. In Melbourne we just go out and do it, but Singapore is a little different with that sort of thing ;) So we did the right thing, we didn't want anybody having any excuse to ban shuffling...anywhere.

So 4 weeks later Jancis and her fantastic SG crew staged the 1st GLOBAL SHUFFLE DAY 17 May 2008.

Here's the official video (with SG officials credits) You'll see quite a few from Shifter Hardstyle Prodigy there too. It was a good occasion for them to cross the border from JB Malaysia and meet-up with the Singapore Shufflers. Shufflers support each other regardless of what crew, religion, language or nationality they are.

Global Shuffle Day became our Victory dance, the Shuffle survived and is now going stronger than ever!

I had many people contact me afterwards about what the next Global Shuffle project was.

So after some chat, we started working on a documentary dvd about the Melbourne Shuffle from it's first steps in 1990 to the Global scene it has become today. The dvd documentary is called GLOBAL SHUFFLE. It will be released in March 2010, to mark 20 years of the Melbourne Shuffle.

Shufflers from around the world are contributing to documentary, with interviews and shufflers showing us around their towns and their favourite shuffle spots, sneak peeks at www.globalshuffle.com

In the mean time we are still doing Global Shuffle Day as a celebration (rather than a protest) each year 17 May or a date close to that on a weekend.

4MR - For Mother Russia

4MR - For Mother Russia are a shuffle crew from Moscow.

They've been shuffling for about a year and a half now.

pcKOT spotted the shuffle online and told Trash7 about this strange new dance called the Melbourne Shuffle. So they learnt the basics from shuffle tutorials online and then started making shuffle films.

They will also be featured in the Global Shuffle documentary dvd, that MSO is producing at the moment.

We want to see shufflers home towns in Global Shuffle, so I asked 4MR to get some shots around Moscow, their favourite shuffle places etc, and if they could, get some shots of them shuffling in the snow. Because we don't get snow in Melbourne and I wanted to see what it was like :)

Well of course you have to go outside in the middle of a Russian winter to do that, which I kinda forgot about, seeing it was summer in Melbourne when I asked them.

So the guys deserve a medal for going out and doing it, all in the name of shuffling :D And it looks mighty cold, well done 4MR.

The few years from 1983 to 1985 produced an explosion of synth based dance music, that we today collectively call Electro.

It was due to the sudden developments in electronic music techniques with the Fairlight CMI digital sampling and polyphonic synthesisers.

Up until the late 1970's synthesisers could only play one note at a time, but the early 80's saw a burst of synths that could play more than one note, usually no more than 8 notes.

This meant synth players could play chords (groups of notes) something only guitars or pianos/organs could previously do.

So now a synth player could fill a concert hall with a big synth sound, often called a 'stab' for a punchy brassy power chord or a 'wash' for a huge orchestral or ambient backing chord.

Add these with synth sequences, synth drums and some jangly guitar with an infectious danceable funk bass, and electro was born.

Here's a medley of electro tracks played 'live' by all time greats Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, at the 1985 Grammy ceremony in LA (USA) with new kids on the block - and eventually proving to be one hit wonders, Howard Jones and Thomas Dolby. There was a huge controversy about this Grammy performance, which had computers, drum machines, samplers and sequencers. The controversy was whether you could call this sort of set-up a 'live' performance. Even the announcer was a real computer voice introducing the guys.

To many of the rock generation, including the punks, it signaled the end of 'real' music and the beginning of fake plastic machine music that had no soul.

They of course were wrong about the music having no soul. As Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock would easily demonstrate both having more than enough 'soul' to share around.

Computers were new at the time, and terrifying to many. Some argued if a computer played the music, it wasn't music at all, and certainly was not live !

Here's a 1982 vid of Peter Gabriel (former lead singer of Genesis) talking about and demonstrating the Fairlight CMI. Peter actually uses a sledgehammer of sorts to try and smash an old TV screen to sample the sound for his music.

Here's the legendary Bob Moog talking about the Fairlight CMI and the beginnings of electronic music going back 25 years from 1983. Robert Moog invented the modular Moog synthesiser.

To quote Moog “…I’ve found the Fairlight to be by far, the most intuitively efficient and satisfying tool for manipulating sounds that I’ve ever used, and that includes modular synthesizers…” High praise indeed.

In 1983 Peter Gabriel released a monster electro hit called Sledgehammer, using the Fairlight. He also dances in the clip using moves created by Melbourne Sharpies from the 1970's

About 3.30 mins in of this 1983 Sledgehammer vid you'll see Peter doing this Sharpies sideways elbow move, (pic above) really well.

He even gets right down in a bent over position, like the experienced dancers did - the 'how low can you go' move. Not sure where Peter got the moves from, but the guy who produced his first single Salisbury Hill, was Rob McKenzie from brilliant 1970's Melbourne band McKenzie Theory (pic right 1972) - yep saw them live in Melbourne.

This is an excellent vid with Herbie Hancock explaining and demonstrating the Fairlight CMI to grown-ups this time. The grown up is the legendary Quincy Jones. You get a fantastic run through of exactly what the Fairlight does, without a mouse! It used a light pen, much the same we today use a mouse, except you touched the screen. It's such a delight watching two music greats play with this gear. They have smiles as big as the Sesame Street kids!! Bigger :)))

Electro brought a new aesthetic to music. Never before in human history had electronic gizmo's been considered musical instruments. (They were usually called special effects units or audio science lab tools.)

But the sounds they made electrified the audience. From clean pure sine wave sounds to nasty noise filtered ring modulators that could bite your ear off, we just could not get enough :)

Oh yeah, and usually there was a singer and the electro tracks became monster hit singles for major Hollywood movies ;) Such as Ghostbusters (1984), Flashdance (1983), Electric Dreams (1984), Never Ending Story (1984), Weird Science (1985) and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Dutch Shuffler visits Melbourne

In February 2009 Millie came to visit Melbourne and be interviewed for the Global Shuffle dvd.

Millie is from the Netherlands and has a dance crew called Dance Max. Here's Millie's vid he's made of his visit.

Millie is best known for being in the worlds first commercial shuffle track/video Melbourne Shufflers - The Shuffle, around the beginning of 2008.

It was great to meet Millie. I took him to a few places in the CBD that were significant oldskool sites.

It's hard to explain the Melbourne underground, it's much easier to show it. We have a lot of back alley's, basements and upper floor buildings that the underground houses itself in. All have obscure nondescript entrances. Often just a simple doorway with stairs.

These are to discourage the mainstream. They look of no interest at first glance, but if you are in the underground, these are passageways into another world, literally in the main street of Melbourne, but unnoticed by most. And that's the way we like it.

The underground has different attitudes to mainstream Melbourne, from the way people dress to their behaviour. The behaviour is most important, it's friendly.

Just finding an underground venue, is like you have completed the first initiation test. We like to think of it as a treasure hunt. You need to put some effort into it, and you are rewarded for your effort.

The Lounge (Swanston st Melbourne) a longtime underground venue was one of these places.

Established in the last global recession of the early 1990's in a disused upstairs retail storage area, Carlos the Lounge owner proudly tells visitors "The Melbourne Shuffle was practically invented on this dance floor", and he's right.

1992 a shuffle club night called Switch commenced, it was renamed a short time later as Filter and became the world's best and longest running shuffle club. Held at The Lounge Wednesday nights every week for 11 years (1992-2003), it was the underground's inner circle club of choice.

It has a concrete floor polished smooth by shufflers feet for 11 years, and it's still exactly the same now, and you can still shuffle on it and the exact same stage as these oldskool shufflers in 1995.

Today the Lounge still operates, but Shufflers may find it a bit ordinary as it is mostly just a sit down day bar with meals these days, catering for an older 20's - 30's mostly mainstream urban crowd.

So say hello to Carlos if you bump into him, tell him Garry/MSO sent you, and if he has the time, he's more than happy to chat about shuffling. After all, he's seen it all from the beginning.

You can still have a bit of a shuffle on the original dance floor and stage though, among the tables, and it's well worth doing as homage to one of the greatest original oldskool shuffle clubs of the world, Filter and it's fantastic crew The Filter Army !

It's the closest you can get to the original oldskoolers these days, by literally shuffling in their footsteps.

The day was a dud in crowd size. There were 90% empty seats and just a couple of dozen on the dance floor. Pretty poor compared to the other shuffle meet-ups that draw 100+ shufflers.; I've seen a few melb forums horrified at SHFL and they can't believe the dj's were involved in such a shonky event. Some of them ripped right into Bexta and Mark Midro over it, suggesting they go back to sydney...but I wouldn't force them on our sydney shuffle friends either.; April 3, 2009 3:30 PM

Shuffle Music: The Twist

The Twist is a twelve bar blues song that gave birth to the Twist dance craze. The song was written and originally released in 1959 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters as a B-side to “Teardrops on Your Letter” peaking at 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song, and the dance the Twist, was popularized in 1960 when the song was covered by Chubby Checker. His single became a smash hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960 and then setting a record by being the only single to reach number one in two different chart runs when it resurfaced and topped the chart again on January 13, 1962.

For Shufflers looking for a slow rockin feel, the twist will suit you fine. And it's easy.

Try shuffling to the music as a warm up/warm down track.

Chubby Checker gives a sophisticated and masterly demonstration of the Twist in this 1960 TV clip.

Our good shuffle friend from Russia pcKOT, has sent us this fantastic 1967 Russian movie clip, featuring a short tutorial on how to do the Twist. I wouldn't be surprised if this technique was the inspiration for the Twist in the first place :D

Сheck it out, Garry, this is the short cut from an old Leonid Gaiday film "Kavkazskaya Plenica" (Kidnapping, Caucasian Style), 1967. Its the first time people in USSR saw this dance, as you can see it also includes a short tutorial =) It was a real cultural breakthrough for those times.

PIC UPDATES:
We've just had confirmation that it is Hydi holding the broom. Our collective memories have got it sorted. I remember Hydi near me, but I had my costume hat on and couldn't see anything but the feet of the people in front of me. Which is how I knew I was facing the camera :)
Krash has the broom stick in the vid I shot of the same morning (see vid below), so the assumption was that Krash had the broom. So it's sorted.
Of course we can't agree on the date of the pic at this stage just the year 1992, we all have different opinions of the matter... bloody typical oldskool lol. We're all in the same pic and we swear by different dates ranging from March 92 to Oct 92. It is worth noting that nobody disputes that the same crew could have been at any of those 8 or so alternate dates for the photo. It just blurs into one year long party.
Brewster Bee has kindly invited everyone over to the PFP Purple Forest Posse facebook group to catch up and post more pic etc. I'd encourage new shufflers to visit and chat with these oldskoolers.

This photo has just surfaced on the oldskool facebook pages. These are original Melbourne Shufflers or as we called ourselves then - Stompers.

It's at the TVU warehouse in Melbourne (Footscray) where many of us lived for most of 1992 running our own TV station and holding shuffle parties - hard life eh ? ;)

Crews would join together to hold events. TVU for instance was Television Unlimited, a formal crew with committee etc who could approach government departments to get test broadcast licenses for experimental TV broadcasts. Pirate TV crews also existed, but they were illegal and carried a 10 year jail sentence.

TVU had this amazing 3 roomed warehouse, each room about 5000 sq feet, and all joined by doors. We joined up with the Every Picture Tells A Story crew and broadcast dance parties live to air, along with our other experimental stuff.

Many of us lived in there between parties and broadcasts, mainly to keep an eye on the expensive broadcast gear we had there.

It was also a club house for us. People would be there every night of the week and weekends were just a long party from Friday night to Sunday night.

Here's one of our broadcast weekends from 2 months before the group pic. You'll get an idea of the other TVU crew from the tech and organisational side. We'd often have this much expensive gear laying around, hence we'd live there to protect it.

This is the TVU promo clip which was broadcast across Melbourne once an hour for the year. It's got footage of the parties held at TVU and the first ever Shuffle footage to be broadcast on TV. ! I edited this clip in this same warehouse in a mammoth 16 hour all night session.

We eventually got kicked out of the warehouse at the end of 1992.

It only lasted that year, but was the most significant early warehouse site in the oldskool era, defining elements of what a Melbourne Warehouse dance party was.

A definition that continued for over a decade and epitomised a true underground Melbourne Shuffle party.

This group pic above, is the morning after an Every Picture Tells A Story party in August (I think) Every Pic 3 or 4 ? Richie 'Rich' Mc'Neill wanted to get a group shot of the TVU crew to put on the flyer for his next Hardware party, but I think we were a bit intense for him. But that didn't stop a lot of us working on Richie's parties over the years.

It was considered ok to be a part of several crews at once, as long as they were not in competition with each other.

In the early days of the oldskool era, it was much like it is now in the Shuffle scene. It's generally too small for people to have big major clans in most towns around the world. And it's still all very new to everyone.

You just want to go out and meet other shufflers. You don't want to know about clan politics, who's cool who's not. You just want to meet up and have fun.

That's how it was in this 1992 pic, just like any shuffle meet-up group pic today.

Most of us were total strangers to each other from all across town at the start, but instantly, you become friends and nearly 20 years later, you're still friends.

Dutch Shufflers in Melbourne

I've spent the past few weeks explaining Melbourne's weather to Millie from the Dutch Shufflers.

Millie's on his way to Melbourne in a couple of weeks and I'll be showing him some of the historic Shuffle sites around Melbourne and interviewing him for the Global Shuffle DVD.

It's about zero degrees in the Netherlands on a warm day at the moment, and yesterday it reached a record 46C in Melbourne. It gets much higher inland.

But as quick as that peak is reached it dropped 20 degrees in about an hour when the cool change came through last night and now the next day it's a chilly 16 degrees and raining outside, and I'm thinking about putting on the heater !

So this is pretty common in Melbourne, these dramatic changes, and we take them in our stride, there's little else you can do about it ;) It's part of Melbourne character.

We live between two feuding jet streams in Melbourne. One to the north draws hot moist air from the tropics, then super heats it over 2000 kms of hot desert and blasts Melbourne with it, as you can see in the weather map of yesterday 7 February 2009 below. Melbourne is about where that bottom red arrow is, covered by the northern jet stream.

Then today 8 February 2009 the Jet Streams Collide. The southern jet stream has pushed it's way up north with cold air straight from the south pole over 3000 klms of antarctic ice chilled sea - Antarctica has 90% of the worlds ice.

Like these jet streams have the whole of the southern hemisphere to play in, and they choose to have a turf war directly over Melbourne !! Why not out at sea ! grrrrr

So what should Millie bring for a Melbourne summer in 2 weeks ? Plan for Everything :)

Body Building Shuffle Moves

In Advanced Shuffle Footwork I mention the choreography of Feet Of Flames - Warrior using body building poses as dance moves. The moves are examples of iconic images or gestures which you can use in your shuffle routine to convey meaning in your shuffling.

This can become part of your shuffle vocabulary ( 1 move = 1 word ). How you present that move is called the context. The context in shuffling is the moves before and after the iconic image or gesture. They convey whether you are taking the move in a serious or fun way.

To reverse this for the shuffler, here is a great vid of a bodybuilding contest. This guy uses the standard body building poses, and then expands his pose vocabulary with dance moves.

The person who posted the vid thinks it's a joke, but he's actually very good.

Shuffle Music: Practice Mix 2. Rock

Rock is often slower than usual shuffling and uses lots of upper body motion. From simple head banging boogie to complex upper body twists and arm moves.

Melbourne had a very strong and large live pub rock scene in the 1970's. Bands from around Australia and surrounding countries would move to Melbourne to 'make it'.

From Thursday to Sunday nights every week you could choose from over 300 live bands, all with a dance floor in front of the band, where you'd find people rockin.

With such a choice, the competition between bands for good gigs was fierce, and the pub crowds were unforgiving. If you didn't have the crowd on their feet and dancing within 3 songs, you would be booed off stage.

It was tough, raw, exciting and live. This was pre disco, this was rock and roll. This is where Rockin was born.

20,000 hippies, rockers and sharpies would turn up to an all day music festival, dance, get stoned, drunk and arrested (by Police), and call it all a good day out.

The most distinctive Melbourne Rockin style of all time, is that of the notorious early/mid 70's Melbourne clans and crews, called Sharpies.

Sharps, both male and female, were very particular about their appearance. From hair style to shoes, you had to 'look Sharp'!

And when you danced it had to be the sharpie dance, which involves a very distinctive 'elbow blow' move combined with an extreme upper body twist in time with the music.

Often girls would stand in a large circle facing in, all doing the same arm movements at the same time. Guys generally staggered around the crowd.

Footwork was a 2 step shuffle done in massive chunky healed boot like shoes. Check out their style in Greg Macainsh's 1974 film Sharpies. Greg is also the Bass player with Melbourne band Skyhooks , see second clip in the mix below.

ROCK DANCE THEORY

Rock as an oldskool shuffle style did in fact exist, though it was still called stomping. It incorporated traditional Melbourne rock type dance moves such as the Sharpie dance.

Rock is an exuberant 'loud' type of shuffle that moves around far more than traditional shuffling, and has far more arm work involved.

It became most popular from about 1993 -1996 when shuffle events had more space in very large warehouses. You had more room to move, swing your hands and arms around, and generally do freeform shuffling, without fear of hitting someone - painful for both you and the person hit.

So compared to the rather confined space of classic shuffling, rockin really stood out with the energy and carefree abandon found at an indie rock gig. As mentioned before, people started saying 'this place is rockin' because of the similarity.

I wont post a bunch of vids showing the style here. I'll leave that up to future posts.

Of more importance is understanding how to dance in a more carefree, freestyle rock like style, using more of your upper body.

You begin with the music ROCK, and you dance to the music.

It's a very physical raw energy dance. You have more of a flow to it, rather than the tight strict steps of hardstyle and classic Celtic dance styled shuffle.

Firstly think of rocking as a movement, you rock backwards and forwards, using the full weight of your body. Like on a swing or in a rocking chair.

It's not the sharp sudden burst like stomping your foot in hardstyle. Your whole body becomes involved, rocking from one position to another.

Rock and Roll, was a slang term for having sex in the 1940's/50's, that's what rock means. It was a time when polite society did not say the word 'sex' in public.

You use the inertia of your body mass in rockin.

Inertia in shuffling is like when you spin and your body just wants to keep spinning, it's the weight of your body, your body mass, that's pushing you.

So instead of suddenly stopping with a jolt, you turn that inertia into another move. You use the energy of your moving body to help start a new move.

For it to be the most effective, your next move needs to be physically complimentary.

EXAMPLE: PHYSICALLY COMPLIMENTARY
1. Sit upright in a chair with your hands resting the top of your legs. Bend forward from the waist then return to sitting position.

2. Now add a Physically Complimentary move. Hold your hands to your chest in the sitting position. Then bend forward again, but this time, unfold your arms in time with the bend. Hands on chest at start, arms wide spread when bent all the way over. Then return to sitting position with hands on chest.

You will feel your muscle attention flow from your waist muscles to your shoulder and arm muscles and back again as each set of muscles comes into strength focus. Your waist and arms now compliment each others characteristics.

For most hardstyle shufflers reading now, you will have just discovered another part of the body to dance with :) Imagine what you can do when you combine both the top and the feet.

That gives you a flow to your style. That's how you get smoothness.

The slower music for Rock gives your body time to be smooth, it's way less stressful than hardstyle, letting your muscles naturally stretch and return. It's more organic, where hardstyle is more robotic (in a good way).

These vids in the mix below are slow paced compared to hardstyle, but are equally danceable. Rock and Roll is after all, first and foremost, dance music!

For shufflers you'll find great ways to use your upper body. Try some of the moves seen in the vids, even the head banging by Canned Heat, to loosen up and strengthen neck muscles.

In fact you will find this mix a real pleasure doing your usual shuffle moves to.

There is no time changing or stretching between the shuffling footage and the AC/DC track. The girls are originally shuffling to hardstyle, but are shuffling in perfect time to Melbourne pub rock of 1975.

With the rock track, it's the same tempo as most hardstyle, but the bass/kick accent is on every second beat. Not every beat like with hardstyle. So it sounds slower, but you can dance 'double time' to it, as we say in Melbourne.

Try it as a warm up or warm down, or just to get greater fluid motion happening in your style.

BTW- The 1st 4 tracks in the mix, (excluding AD/DC), are what were called Shuffle tracks in rock music at the time. It's distinct for it's syncopated rhythm, a loose shuffling feel with a prominent off beat. Compared to the hard to the floor 1st beat accent of AC/DC's Long way to the top, which was just called Rock.

Rocking is slower than usual shuffling and uses lots of upper body motion. From simple head banging boogie to complex upper body twists and arm moves.

You rock to get loose or get into the groove as they used to say in Melbourne in the 1970's when Rockin was popular.

Melbourne had a very strong and large live pub rock scene in the 1970's. Bands from around Australia and surrounding countries would move to Melbourne to 'make it'.

From Thursday to Sunday nights every week you could choose from over 300 live bands, all with a dance floor in front of the band, where you'd find people rockin.

It was tough, exciting and live. This was pre disco, this was rock and roll. This is where Rockin was born.

The most distinctive Melbourne Rockin style of all time is that of notorious early 1970's Melbourne crews called Sharpies.

Sharps, both male and female, were very particular about their appearance. From hair style to shoes, you had to 'look Sharp'!

And when you danced it had to be the sharpie dance, which involves a very distinctive 'elbow blow' move combined with an extreme upper body twist in time with the music.

Often girls would stand in a large circle facing in all doing the same arm movements at the same time. Guys generally staggered around the crowd.

Footwork was a 2 step shuffle done in massive chunky healed boot like shoes.
