Global Shuffle: At the Movies

Documentary Feature Global Shuffle will be screening at selected film festivals around the world in 2011/2012, as part of the GLOBAL SHUFFLE TOUR.

GLOBAL SHUFFLE TOUR : YOUR TOWN

We want to give shufflers everywhere the chance to experience the Global Shuffle movie on the big screen, with a bunch of other shufflers from your town.

If you have a film festival somewhere near-by, even if it's a road trip away please let us know about it, and we'll submit the movie for the film festival.

If you don't know of any film festivals near-by, let us know your town so we can hunt down one for you.

MOVIE and MEET-UP TOUR

We will be organizing free meet-ups before and after screenings at the film festivals where possible - usually they only screen a movie 2-3 times max per festival, after the premier screening has sold out.

These meet-ups will be a great way to meet other shufflers from your area. We hope the film festivals can help out with some suitable shuffling area near the cinema, and even get some media attention for the local news etc.

A typical meet-up starts about 90 minutes before the scheduled cinema screening time.

Typical Meet-Up Structure

SHUFFLE and CHAT: 1 hour
BREAK prepare for movie (buy munchees etc) 30 mins
MOVIE Global Shuffle Documentary Feature 80 mins
SHUFFLE and CHAT: 2 hours

So please let us know if you'd like to have an official GLOBAL SHUFFLE meet-up in your town here.

DVD

The dvd is not scheduled for release yet, but will be able to buy, download or rent the dvd and soundtrack online thru Amazon.

Check for updates  at Global Shuffle//IMDb

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1753869/

CINEMA SCREENING DATES

We'll keep adding film festivals to the list, in the order they occur during the year.

Some film festivals only accept Premiers (first screening) for that country or region in their festivals. So they get first screening. Then we can screen at other festivals who don't have the Premier requirement. Many of those will be in 2012.

Please remember this is only the submit stage to the film festivals. We'll be very sure to let you know the screening dates if we are selected. Submit deadlines are usually 3-4 months before the festival dates. Acceptance Notification to the festivals is usually 6-8 weeks before the festival dates.

1st Russian Melbourne Shuffle League. 2008-09

Russian shuffle crew 4MR//For Mother Russia have set up the first Russian Melbourne Shuffle League (RMSL), in fact it's the worlds first Shuffle league too.

MSO supports the League and the winner/s will be appearing with 4MR on the GLOBAL SHUFFLE dvd.

Here's a compilation vid of some of the great shufflers in the league. Fantastic to see so many girls in the league too.

Lots of great shuffling all around, with some very distinctive styles. Check out Emilio's unbelievably amazing spin 2:04. I had to replay it a few times to make sure it wasn't faked !  What training did you do ? Very well done Emilio.

There's a couple of other mighty fine spins in there too. Check it out...leave a comment.

GLOBAL SHUFFLE DAY. Singapore

MSO started Global Shuffle in 2007, as a fight back to a campaign to Ban the Melbourne Shuffle

Naturally shufflers went berzerk and staged protest boycotts of the Sydney club owner who wanted to ban the Shuffle. He said Shufflers took up too much room on the dance floor. Club owners prefer to have people standing on the dance floor drinking alcohol, they make more money that way.

So we set the date 17 May 2008 as a challenge to this fool, to prove that Shufflers were no push-over, and there was no way he could ban Shufflers shuffling. We would defiantly shuffle where ever we were around the world on that day, banned or not.

Shufflers started to avoid clubs in general that didn't allow Shuffling on the dance floors as a protest too. Everybody just started having meet-ups in public parks, malls, carparks all the free places. That really pissed off the club owners, they had no control over us, and others were avoiding clubs in protest to support us. The clubs were loosing lots of money.

The Sydney club owner fell out of favour very quickly as other Sydney club owners abandoned him, and publicly announced their support for Shufflers and Shuffling. All of the calling him an idiot.

By the time 17 May 2008 rolled around, the anti-Shuffle guys club had closed, and nobody has heard of him since.

About 4 weeks before 17 May 2008, a young lady named Jancis from Singapore contacted me to see if she could hold an official Global Shuffle meet-up event in Singapore. It would also be Singapore's first official Shuffle meet-up.

There wasn't much time, so we worked really hard and fast getting proper permission etc to hold an outdoor meet-up. In Melbourne we just go out and do it, but Singapore is a little different with that sort of thing ;) So we did the right thing, we didn't want anybody having any excuse to ban shuffling...anywhere.

So 4 weeks later Jancis and her fantastic SG crew staged the 1st GLOBAL SHUFFLE DAY 17 May 2008.

Here's the official video (with SG officials credits) You'll see quite a few from Shifter Hardstyle Prodigy there too. It was a good occasion for them to cross the border from JB Malaysia and meet-up with the Singapore Shufflers. Shufflers support each other regardless of what crew, religion, language or nationality they are.

Global Shuffle Day became our Victory dance, the Shuffle survived and is now going stronger than ever!

I had many people contact me afterwards about what the next Global Shuffle project was.

So after some chat, we started working on a documentary dvd about the Melbourne Shuffle from it's first steps in 1990 to the Global scene it has become today. The dvd documentary is called GLOBAL SHUFFLE. It will be released in March 2010, to mark 20 years of the Melbourne Shuffle.

Shufflers from around the world are contributing to documentary, with interviews and shufflers showing us around their towns and their favourite shuffle spots, sneak peeks at www.globalshuffle.com

In the mean time we are still doing Global Shuffle Day as a celebration (rather than a protest) each year 17 May or a date close to that on a weekend.

Here's some great vids of Global Shuffle Day (GSD) 2009 in Singapore.

Dutch Shuffler visits Melbourne

In February 2009 Millie came to visit Melbourne and be interviewed for the Global Shuffle dvd.

Millie is from the Netherlands and has a dance crew called Dance Max. Here's Millie's vid he's made of his visit.

Dutch Shuffler in Down Under

Millie is best known for being in the worlds first commercial shuffle track/video Melbourne Shufflers - The Shuffle, around the beginning of 2008.

Melbourne Shufflers - The Shuffle.

It was great to meet Millie. I took him to a few places in the CBD that were significant oldskool sites.

It's hard to explain the Melbourne underground, it's much easier to show it. We have a lot of back alley's, basements and upper floor buildings that the underground houses itself in. All have obscure nondescript entrances. Often just a simple doorway with stairs.

These are to discourage the mainstream. They look of no interest at first glance, but if you are in the underground, these are passageways into another world, literally in the main street of Melbourne, but unnoticed by most. And that's the way we like it.

The underground has different attitudes to mainstream Melbourne, from the way people dress to their behaviour. The behaviour is most important, it's friendly.

Just finding an underground venue, is like you have completed the first initiation test. We like to think of it as a treasure hunt. You need to put some effort into it, and you are rewarded for your effort.

The Lounge (Swanston st Melbourne) a longtime underground venue was one of these places.

Established in the last global recession of the early 1990's in a disused upstairs retail storage area, Carlos the Lounge owner proudly tells visitors "The Melbourne Shuffle was practically invented on this dance floor", and he's right.

1992 a shuffle club night called Switch commenced, it was renamed a short time later as Filter and became the world's best and longest running shuffle club. Held at The Lounge Wednesday nights every week for 11 years (1992-2003), it was the underground's inner circle club of choice.

It has a concrete floor polished smooth by shufflers feet for 11 years, and it's still exactly the same now, and you can still shuffle on it and the exact same stage as these oldskool shufflers in 1995.

Filter @ Lounge 1995

Here's the 1995 video footage of shufflers on the same Filter stage.

Today the Lounge still operates, but Shufflers may find it a bit ordinary as it is mostly just a sit down day bar with meals these days, catering for an older 20's - 30's mostly mainstream urban crowd.

So say hello to Carlos if you bump into him, tell him Garry/MSO sent you, and if he has the time, he's more than happy to chat about shuffling. After all, he's seen it all from the beginning.

You can still have a bit of a shuffle on the original dance floor and stage though, among the tables, and it's well worth doing as homage to one of the greatest original oldskool shuffle clubs of the world, Filter and it's fantastic crew The Filter Army !

It's the closest you can get to the original oldskoolers these days, by literally shuffling in their footsteps.

Dutch Shufflers in Melbourne

I've spent the past few weeks explaining Melbourne's weather to Millie from the Dutch Shufflers.

Millie's on his way to Melbourne in a couple of weeks and I'll be showing him some of the historic Shuffle sites around Melbourne and interviewing him for the Global Shuffle DVD.

It's about zero degrees in the Netherlands on a warm day at the moment, and yesterday it reached a record 46C in Melbourne. It gets much higher inland.

But as quick as that peak is reached it dropped 20 degrees in about an hour when the cool change came through last night and now the next day it's a chilly 16 degrees and raining outside, and I'm thinking about putting on the heater !

So this is pretty common in Melbourne, these dramatic changes, and we take them in our stride, there's little else you can do about it ;) It's part of Melbourne character.

We live between two feuding jet streams in Melbourne. One to the north draws hot moist air from the tropics, then super heats it over 2000 kms of hot desert and blasts Melbourne with it, as you can see in the weather map of yesterday 7 February 2009 below. Melbourne is about where that bottom red arrow is, covered by the northern jet stream.

Then today 8 February 2009 the Jet Streams Collide. The southern jet stream has pushed it's way up north with cold air straight from the south pole over 3000 klms of antarctic ice chilled sea - Antarctica has 90% of the worlds ice.

Like these jet streams have the whole of the southern hemisphere to play in, and they choose to have a turf war directly over Melbourne !! Why not out at sea ! grrrrr

So what should Millie bring for a Melbourne summer in 2 weeks ? Plan for Everything :)

We'll be shooting around the Melbourne CBD in about two weeks. If you spot us come up and say hello.

Here's the latest from the Dutch Shufflers, with some great shots of the crew.

Shuffle WINS

Global Shuffle declared a SUCCESS.

About 6 months ago a club promoter in Sydney Australia announced a campaign to ban the Melbourne Shuffle, which lead to the Global Shuffle being created. We set the deadline of 17 May 2008 as a challenge to this dance nazi, to go ahead, just try stop the Shuffle.

Why did he want to ban the Melbourne Shuffle ? Because he hated it, and hated Shufflers.

A bigoted hate campaign then started, trying to topple the Global Shuffle, with nasty and insulting hate posts and vids directed at any new or young shuffler to try and stop them from Shuffling. The dance nazi's were too afraid of oldskoolers and MSO, to attack us directly ;)

The abuse targeted under 18 year olds, saying what they did was not cool, but if they did it in a Melbourne or Sydney night club, where the entry age is 18 and over because of alcohol license laws, then they'd be cool.

It back fired on the haters and dance nazi's, who are mostly in their late 20's. Their clubs might have been cool 5-8 years ago, but they are well past it now.

So young shufflers all over the world began to dance in the streets organising their own street meet ups, starting up their own forums in their own local language across Europe so they didn't have to put up with the crap on Melbourne based forums who support the dance nazi's.

MSO now has visitors from over 3,500 cities in 100 countries, the Shuffle is in movies, on TV, is in the main stream media, and a bunch of us got together for meet ups on 17 May 2008 to show we are not intimidated by racists and haters, and Shuffled in proud defiance.

So instead of destroying the shuffle the past 6 months.

The SHUFFLE IS BOOMING

and the dance nazi's have all but scurried off with their tail between their legs, and are basically forgotten now.

I've been contacted by many new shufflers who wanted to post vids on the Global Shuffle day, but felt they needed more practice before having their youtube debut. Others had exams and other commitments etc.

So we are extending the Global Shuffle to an ongoing thing. Just put 'globalshuffle' as a tag in your vid to show you support Shufflers of all abilities, ages, races, religions, nationalities.

You are welcome to add your vids to the official forum thread too.

http://mso1.cultureforum.net/global-shuffle-2008-f18/global-shuffle-vids-t67.htm

>>> Will there be another Global Shuffle Day? Maybe. Speaking for Shufflers in Melbourne, we'd like it during our (southern) Summer. We're not fond of shuffling in the cold wet rain hehe. But then that makes it winter for those in the north.

And so many people had a great time meeting up on 17 May, they want to do it again too.

So stay tooned we'll see if we can come up with something that suits everybody.

>>> I would personally like to thank our Malaysian and Singapore shuffle friends and crews, Shifter, Tribezone, Hazard Minors for their tireless support, and Jancis on a great effort with her first Shuffle event in Singapore. And to all who attended or supported Global Shuffle the world over.

And thanks to our American shuffle friends in New York who tried valiantly to get the Shuffle parade float happening in the New York Dance parade, but ran into internal organisation opposition. - After a good start and support from the Dance Parade founder and organiser, the parade was forced to change direction, and stop embarrassing the politicians with political remarks, it's election year in the USA and the politicians are nervous. So the Melbourne Shuffle was considered to be too outspoken for the New York Dance Parade, by some influential people inside and outside of the organisation.

Sadly the parade had less than half the dancers than last year, and the 80 year old dance bans in New York, still remain.

Droopy Pants Law

Just when you thought it was safe...a law about how you can wear your pants !!!

You know this problem would be solved if you just wore Phats to school. You could even have the reflectors in school colours !! ;)

>>>>>> o <<<<<<

State passes droopy pants law

Fri Mar 14, 2008 TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - The Florida Senate wants public school students to pull up their pants. Lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that could mean suspensions for students with droopy britches.

It won't become law unless the House of Representatives passes a companion measure.

Florida could join several southern U.S. towns and cities that have passed "saggy pants" laws aimed at outlawing what some teenagers consider a fashion statement -- wearing pants half way down their buttocks, exposing flesh or underwear.

Supporters say schools sometimes don't properly police dress codes and parents are often "under aware" of what their kids are wearing to school.

Critics say the measure is unnecessary, arguing that appearance and dress codes should be the responsibility of school districts and parents.

Despite being the butt of jokes, the bill's sponsor, Orlando Sen. Gary Siplin, a Democrat, has said the fashion statement has a back-story -- it was made popular by rap artists after first appearing among prison inmates as a signal they were looking for sex.

"All we're trying to do now is trying to inform folks that we have a fad now that does not have a very good origination," Siplin said. "We're trying to make an example in school," he added, saying it would help students get jobs and a degree.

The Florida city of Riviera Beach passed its own saggy pants law Tuesday, with a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail for repeat offenders.

Melbourne Shuffle in World Of Warcraft 2

Here's the second vid from Shuffler gorakaraz1 otherwise known as Jonas Agersø from Denmark.

Good to see the new improved version. Bit of (MC) Hammer slide in there as well.

And I agree with many comments in forums such as on Clept.net , Yes there has got to be a rave in World of Warcraft !!

In fact Melbourne Shuffle Oldskool is organising one for May 17 2008 for the Global Shuffle. So start practicing and stay tooned for more info.

It'd be great I reckon, if the dance programing for characters was open for developers too. Get some serious shuffle avatars happening.

Like for instance instead of hat-tricks with your cap, there could be 'head-tricks, where you could spin your head around or lift it off and juggle it while shuffling :)

And there'd have to be some sort of flying shuffle, do it on a dragons back or something. Have one with your feet on fire...

Any WoW's who can offer more info about doing parties and developing characters? Please very much, get in touch!!
